| "To pursue karate means to seek to master one's self."
- Shoshin Nagamine, The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do, p. 47 |
Karate is a great form of exercise and develops mind, body and spirt. Unlike some other forms of exercise, the practice of Karate engages the whole body and mind. Whether you are practicing kata (forms), kumite (sparring), kubudo (weapons) or partner exercises such as yakusoku kumite, your mind is actively focused and your entire body is used to perform each movement.
We teach Matsubayashi-ryu Okinawan Karate-do, a style of Shorin-ryu Karate. Matsubayashi-ryu was founded by master Shoshin Nagamine. Master Nagamine studied Karate under three great masters: Ankichi Arakaki, Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu. Chotoku Kyan was student of the noted Karate master Sokon Matsumura. Choki Motobu studied under noted Karate master Kosaku Matsumura. Since Master Nagamine's teachings are based on the ideas of master Sokon Matsumura and master Kosaku Matsumura, he adopted the name of Matsubayashi-ryu to honor both masters.
Karate is an excellent cross training activity. Whether you play baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey or any other sport, you will benefit from your Karate training.
Each program has a carefully developed curriculum that addresses the unique needs of each group. We continually enhance our curriculum and approach to teaching by attending conferences, networking with other schools and observing the progress of our students.
